About the Film

Night on the Galactic Railroad movie cover

Night on the Galactic Railroad (銀河鉄道の夜) is a landmark 1985 Japanese animated film directed by Gisaburō Sugii, adapted from Kenji Miyazawa's unfinished 1927 novel. The film is celebrated for its hauntingly poetic atmosphere and philosophical depth, exploring themes of mortality, friendship, and transcendence.

The story follows Giovanni, a lonely boy who boards a mysterious train that travels through the cosmos, accompanied by his closest friend Campanella. What unfolds is a dreamlike odyssey through celestial landscapes, filled with allegory and quiet sorrow.

Real happiness, I think, is when both you and everyone around you are searching together for what is truly good — for all of the universe.

— Campanella, Night on the Galactic Railroad

Plot

In a quiet town reminiscent of Meiji-era Japan, Giovanni is a poor, lonely boy who works nights at a printing shop to support his ailing mother. On the night of the Festival of the Stars, while his classmates celebrate, Giovanni falls asleep alone on a hilltop — and awakens aboard a mysterious train hurtling through the Milky Way.

Beside him sits his closest friend, Campanella. Together they travel through breathtaking cosmic landscapes — past glowing nebulae, star-filled rivers, and celestial stations — gathering passengers who each carry their own quiet grief or peace. Among them are two orphaned siblings from a sunken ship, a jovial bird catcher, and a gentle teacher guiding her young charges onward.

As the journey deepens, Giovanni senses something is wrong. At the Southern Cross station, Campanella quietly departs — and Giovanni awakens alone on the hilltop. Returning to town, he learns that Campanella drowned in the river earlier that evening, having jumped in to save a classmate. The dream was real: he had been traveling with his friend's departing soul.
